Project Overview

We are upgrading the wastewater network at Cramond Beach in Edinburgh to improve the quality of the marine environment and to reduce sewer-related debris entering the Firth of Forth.

This £8.6 million investment forms part of our wider £500 million Improving Urban Waters programme, which is focused on enhancing water quality in communities across Scotland.

Work is expected to begin in July 2026, with completion anticipated in autumn 2027.

The project will be delivered by Caledonia Water Alliance on behalf of Scottish Water.

The project will upgrade the local wastewater network to protect the marine environment and reduce sewer related debris entering the Firth of Forth

What We Are Doing

We will be upgrading three storm overflows – at Cramond House, Davidson’s Mains and Cramond Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), as well as upgrading the local sewer network.

Work on Cramond House and Davidson’s Mains will begin in July 2026 and at Cramond SPS in October 2026.

As well as installing new overflow chambers, powered screens will prevent objects larger than 6mm from entering the water environment during periods of heavy rainfall.

The existing storm overflows are located underground

Improving Urban Waters

Why We Are Doing It

Working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Scottish Water identified priority storm overflows for improvement or replacement.

Regular beach clean-ups in the area as well as an aesthetic study found evidence of sewer-related debris at Cramond Beach, Cramond Island and the surrounding causeway.

Under the banner ‘Draining the Rain, Enhancing the Environment’ the Improving Urban Waters investment will help reduce spills and prevent sewage-related debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during periods of rainfall.

Community Engagement

We are committed to keeping residents and businesses informed throughout the project. As part of this, we held a stakeholder briefing in April 2026 to provide an early update on our plans and engage directly with key partners.

More recently, we hosted a community information event at Cramond Kirk on 11 June 2026, which was attended by around 50 residents, stakeholders and local business owners. This event provided an opportunity for attendees to meet the project team, learn more about the work, and ask any questions.

The information presented at both of these events can be found in the documents hub section of this page.
