Project Overview

Scottish Water is committed to ensuring that all domestic properties supplied by, or connected through, Scottish Water assets (known as a public water supply) meet the requirements of the Public Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations.

Following guidance from the Scottish Government on the interpretation of the Public Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2014, we are working to identify the most effective way to ensure affected water supplies meet the required standards as quickly as possible.

Protecting public health and maintaining compliance with drinking water quality standards is our priority. To achieve this, we will:

  • Write to affected customers to explain Scottish Water’s legal responsibilities and obligations.

  • Carry out surveys, inspections and water quality sampling where required.

  • Develop and implement improvement plans for affected supplies where necessary

Customer Engagement

We understand that this information may be different from what some customers have previously been told or understood about their water supply. In some cases, customers may believe their property is served by a private water supply and is not connected to Scottish Water's network.

We are currently contacting properties that we have identified as being connected to the public water supply and arranging for water samples to be taken.

If you have received a letter from Scottish Water, please contact us on 0800 0778 778 so that we can arrange for your water supply to be sampled.

Supporting You

We are committed to supporting you while we work to improve your water supply.

If your tap water is not currently suitable for drinking, you will be placed on a 'Boil Notice' and will be advised to boil your water before drinking and for food preperation.

Additionally, we will provide bottled water, where needed, free of charge. To arrange this support, please contact us using the details below.

Upgrading Your Water Supply

We are working towards a long-term solution to ensure your water supply consistently meets all required drinking water quality standards.

This may involve upgrading existing treatment facilities or installing new infrastructure to connect your property to a public water supply.

Our investigations are still ongoing, so we are not yet able to confirm the exact solution or timescales. However, we are working hard to identify the best approach and will keep affected customers updated as more information becomes available.

Contacting Us

We will continue to work closely with customers and regulators to ensure water supplies meet the required standards and provide a safe, reliable service.
