University Hospital Monklands

Project Overview
We are investing £8.6 million in our wastewater network, replacing more than 650 metres of pipework across six locations in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.
The project will deliver benefits for the environment and existing customers across various communities by reducing the risk of sewer flooding.
It is also a key part of enabling works to support future development of the new University Hospital Monklands site in Wester Moffat, Airdrie.
Six locations across Airdrie, Coatbridge, Bargeddie and Uddingston have been identified for investment.
The work is being delivered by our commercial subsidiary, Scottish Water Horizons, and contactor, Mackenzie Construction.

What We Are Doing
Six locations across Airdrie, Coatbridge, Bargeddie and Uddingston have been identified for investment. The works will increase capacity within the existing sewer network through the installation of new sewer storage pipes and manholes, helping the system cope more effectively during periods of heavy rainfall.
The first element of construction began in Airdrie in August 2026, with dates for the remaining elements to be confirmed as the programme progresses.
The construction activity will largely take place in grassland, woodland, private land and golf course locations, with work areas generally situated away from public roads. As a result, no traffic management measures are anticipated.
In advance of construction, some tree clearance works will take place where required. These activities have been carefully planned, with environmental surveys undertaken in advance, and compensatory planting to be carried out as part of the project.
The surveys included tree aerial inspections for bats and their roosts and arboricultural surveys to assess any potential risks and determine tree management strategies.
Further information on each work location, including maps, timelines, and site-specific details, is available through the links at the bottom of this page.

Why We Are Doing It
NHS Lanarkshire is to build a new state-of-the-art replacement for University Hospital Monklands on a site at Wester Moffat in Airdrie. To support the new hospital, the surrounding sewer network requires upgrading.
