Back of a Scottish Water van next to road traffic cones and signage

Merryton Bridge in Nairn has been closed with immediate effect on safety grounds.

This follows the findings of an engineering assessment which reported the bridge as having significant damage. The report identified deterioration of sections of the bridge deck, defects within the supporting structure, corrosion affecting the parapets and concerns about the condition of part of the bridge support at the western end. It also highlighted the existing handrails do not meet modern safety standards.

Therefore, we have taken the decision, in the interests of public safety, to suspend access to all pedestrians and cyclists.

Secure fencing and signs have been put in place at the bridge, which is owned and maintained by Scottish Water as part of a sewer crossing carrying wastewater infrastructure beneath the bridge over the River Nairn.

The nearest alternative crossing point over the River Nairn is the Harbour Bridge, which is located further north near the Nairn Caravan Park, or Bridge Street on the A96.

At this stage, it is not possible to confirm how long the bridge will remain closed. Further assessments and investigations will now be carried out to help determine the options available.

We appreciate that this closure may cause some inconvenience for those who regularly use this bridge and are aware that the Nairn Highland Games are taking place this weekend, however public safety is our priority. We will provide more information once available.

We would like to apologise to the local community and thank them for their patience and understanding while we investigate this further.
