project statys delivery

Project Overview

We are delivering a major investment to help improve the quality of bathing water in Lower Largo Bay.

This investment will see installation of a new treatment solution which involves a non-chemical waste water treatment plant incorporating UV disinfection alongside secondary treatment to help improve the quality of Bathing Water in the bay.

This treatment plant will be located on land adjacent to the existing wastewater treatment works.

What We Are Doing

Lower Largo bay has been designated an official Bathing Water and Scottish Water has undertaken a programme of work with SEPA, Fife Council and the local community with regards to understanding the improvements needed to the waste water network and assets to meet Sufficient status as a minimum.

The purpose of the new treatment system is to add secondary treatment during the bathing season to the existing waste water treatment works, that provides primary treatment only.

Delivery of this project involves the installation of equipment including a new access road and bellmouth off the existing A915, two secondary treatment kiosks (18 metres x 4 metres x 3.5 metres high), tertiary filters, UV filters and temporary power generators.

Equipment will be housed within and protected by a 2.4m high security fence, with a security gate.

Update June 2026

We are making good progress and have now completed construction of a road off the existing A915. This road will provide access to build and maintain the non-chemical wastewater treatment plant which has been designed to provide secondary treatment to help improve the quality of Bathing Water in the bay.

Operatives are now in the process of installing pipework at the new site and preparing the area for the installation of equipment.

Work is also underway at the existing Wastewater Treatment Works. Our teams are creating a concrete base to support a new pumping station on site and installing a perimeter fence.

As previously advised, a temporary footpath closure remains in place for the safety of the public and our operatives.

We are doing everything we can to complete this work as quickly and as safely as possible. Initial commissioning is due to start at the beginning of August and we anticipate the system will be operational by late August/early September.

Our on-site teams are working with the community to minimise disruption and we thank everyone impacted for their patience and understanding while these essential works are taking place.

The public is reminded that unauthorised personnel should not enter the site under any circumstances.

Community engagement

We held a drop-in public information event at the Durham Hall in November 2025 where members of the project team were available to explain more about the work involved and to take on board any concerns or questions from the community. The information boards from this event can be viewed below.
