Emergency repairs

A void has opened underneath Annan Road

We are carrying out emergency sewer repair works that require the closure of a major route through Dumfries.

A void has opened underneath Annan Road, close to its junction with Millburn Avenue.

In order to carry out a full investigation and repair we have had to close a section of the A780 Annan Road between the two junctions with Millburn Avenue to all traffic as the damaged sewer is approximately four metres below ground. This is necessary for the safety of the public and our operatives.

A diversion route is in place. The route has been chosen due to there being no suitable HGV diversion local to the closure, and can be viewed in the graphic linked below.

Road users are asked to follow all diversion signs and allow extra time for journeys particularly at peak times.

There is no access to driveways within the closure and our team has contacted those living locally who will need to find alternative parking. Both footpaths remain open as usual.

At this stage it is too early to say how long the road closure will be in place. We will have a better idea once the damaged sewer has been exposed and surveyed.

Given the complexities of the repairs which are required, there may be periods of investigations/design which appear to show no site works ongoing. Please be assured that work will be ongoing in the background to ensure all repairs are completed as quickly and safely as possible.

We appreciate that this is a very busy route and thank everyone impacted for their patience, understanding and cooperation while we carry out these essential repairs.
